The World Is a Dark Place

Christmas contains many spiritual truths, but it will be hard to grasp the others unless we grasp this one first. That is, that the world is a dark place, and we will never find our way or see reality unless Jesus is our Light. -- Tim Keller

The reality of Christmas is like a brilliant star against a black night. The world is like that black night. It is a dark place full of broken people, broken relationships, broken bodies, and death. But Christmas is the announcement that Light and Life has come into the world in the person of Christ. Because of that, even as we deal with the realities of this dark world, we can look to Christ and find great hope. Death and decay does not get the final word. Jesus has conquered sin and death, He has brought light and life, and He has imputed His victory to those who trust in Him. Christmas is a joyous reminder of that truth.

John 1:1–5 (NKJV) — 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
